Career Overview

As former British Permanent Representative to NATO, Sir Stewart is a consultant and prominent international commentator on defence and security issues.

He is a senior diplomat with multilateral negotiating experience at the United Nations (three postings including the UN Millennium Declaration) where he dealt with almost every major international security problem; EU and NATO (two postings) combined with bilateral experience in Ireland and the UK (including within the Cabinet Office and as Private Secretary to a UK Foreign Office Minister).

During his diplomatic career he focused on Security Policy and Crisis Management as Deputy Crisis Manager for the 1990-91 Gulf War, for which he was awarded an OBE; in the UN Security Council; and at NATO. Sir Stewart has also been involved in bilateral work in the Balkans and South Caucasus. Management challenges during his career have included handling staff and hostage families during the Gulf War; managing the UK Mission in New York in the aftermath of 9/11; and helping bring together victims of the Northern Ireland Troubles. He also led the organisation of international Summit Conferences (Commonwealth, G8, EU, ASEM) as Director (Conferences) for the FCO during the Blair government.

Sir Stewart is a key member of ADRg Ambassadors' Training and Coaching Programme, using his experience in bilateral and multilateral negotiation to provide training in advanced negotiation and diplomatic skills to senior leaders in international organisations, including the International Atomic Energy Agency.

He advises the NGO Transparency International on counter-corruption in the defence and security sectors and is researching the linkages between conflict and corruption. He is also a Civil Adviser to the Higher Command & Staff Course at the UK Defence Academy for officers judged capable of reaching the most senior ranks of the British Armed Forces.

He is an accredited Mediator through ADR Group, a sister company to ADRg Ambassadors.
