Career Overview
Sir John has extensive and varied experience in corporate finance, HM Treasury and UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, including as British Ambassador to Croatia, with a long record of negotiating with governments in the EU, UN and in Central Europe/Balkans.
As FCO European Political Correspondent responsible for all UK foreign policy coordination in the EU, he then moved to HM Treasury. Between postings to Berlin and the UN in Geneva he led the FCO Information team in London.
Sir John was closely involved in policy of EU and NATO enlargement and as British Ambassador to Croatia he dealt with difficult issues of post-war reconciliation. He also has long experience in bridging gaps between entrenched positions in highly sensitive major policy areas such as UK social security budgets, asylum policy and German reunification.
As a partner with ADRg Ambassadors, work has included helping a company to resolve a series of disputes that have required action by the authorities including securing meetings with influential policy-makers and helping the client present its case as effectively as possible; helping the client to create a more understanding and supportive partnership with the authorities at national, regional and local level; advising the client on strategic and presentational issues; and introducing the client to potential private sector partners.
He is an accredited Mediator through ADR Group, a sister company to ADRg Ambassadors and is a member of the Management Committee of ADRg Ambassadors.
He is a Trustee of the Museum of East Asian Art in Bath and is also active as a photographer whose work has been exhibited and published.
