Career Overview

Sir David has extensive experience of working in and with countries and places on the brink of break-up (former Yugoslavia), those seriously divided (Berlin, Cyprus, Bosnia), and those where regional tensions run high (South-Eastern Europe).

As British High Commissioner in Cyprus, he played a full role in negotiations on a Cyprus settlement and EU accession, shuttling regularly between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders.

As British Ambassador in Greece, he helped the Greek government achieve a break-through against terrorism, assisted with planning the security of the 2004 Olympic Games, and was knighted in 2003. He also gained experience in inter-Governmental disputes over significant heritage issues.

Prior to that he had postings in Belgrade, Athens and Moscow and was Head of the Eastern European Department in the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. After retirement from diplomatic service he was appointed Political Advisor to the EU Peace-Keeping Force in Bosnia, helping ensure a secure transition from the previous NATO Force, and assisting the central government in combating organised crime and corruption.

Sir David has a degree in the History of Art from the Courtauld Institute and is a published author (The Mystery of Edwin Drood published in 2011).

He also works for various animal welfare charities and is involved in the development of a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare.

He is an accredited Mediator through ADR Group, a sister company to ADRg Ambassadors.
